  • A Senatorial atonement for past blocking of anti-lynching bills

Finally, maybe we can atone for the past injustice done on hundreds of Americans.

    Antonement for past injustice.

For those who aspire to live in a high cost, high tax, big government place, our nation and the world offers plenty of options. Vermont, Canada and Venezuela all offer you the opportunity to live in the socialist, big government paradise you long for. –Senator Rubio

      DOH!

I should have known you wouldn't understand the sentiment behind such an act.

Well it is a tad bit late. When was the last lynching? Would the murders of Civil Rights workers in the 1950s and 1960s count?

Yes, Doc -- the murders during the Civil Rights movement qualify as lynchings.

                  It's not pointless.

One of the purposes of this act is to honestly deal with our own country's darker times in its history. Germany today is an excellent example in how a country can honestly deal with its own history.

And this is the case with the atonement earlier today -- an honest reflection on a horrible time period for many African-Americans living in the South.

It's theater. If I want theater, I'll go to either Malco or watch a play at the University. The hollow gesture does nothing to help blacks alive today.

It helps combat the popular culture of self-congratulatory history.

By honestly confronting the instances of racial injustice done in the past, we come closer to understanding how we are STILL stuck with racial problems today.

Statements like this define who we are as a people. This means we have decided to take responsbility for our past and ask for forgivness for our mistakes.

Yeah, it's too late, but it's better than nothing.

And hopefully this will help prevent future generations from making the same silly mistakes, as it becomes an ideal embedded in our national identity.

                            Et al.

Erm, the black man who was dragged to death behind a pickup a few years ago in Texas doesn't count as a lynching?

Apparantly 12 Senators voted against this law... Unfortunately, we don't have their names since it was a voice, as opposed to roll call vote. But we do know that there were 60 initial cosponsors, plus another 20 cosponsors afterwards, so that means 20 names.
