    So what's your dram?

Currently on my shelf I have....

    15 year-old Glenfarclas
    Cask strength (105) Glenfarclas
    Laphroaig 10 year-old
Caol Ila 10 year-old cask strength
    Talisker
    Poit Dubh 12 year-old.

Once you get a taste for the island malts, you never go back.

    A-ha!

    Standard Glenlivet 12yr ;
    Cask strength Macallan 15yr
    Glenmorangie (10 or 12?)
    Caol Ila 15 (12 maybe, don'r remember)
    10 Yr Laphroaig
Got 2 weeks ago a gift from friend/client a 1973 Mortlach single cask bottling. Saving for some good occasion.

There's maybe 5 mm of Talisker left as well

Hot tip from the Gimp- if you see Poit Dubh, buy it.

It's made by the Gaelic whisky company- a tiny outfit on Skye- and intended for the Gaelic-speaking communities around the Western Isles. It's the good stuff- they don't use chill filtering so it's got a purist and slightly oily taste unlike the more commercial malts. It's your classic undiscovered classic.

        Glenmorangie 10 year old
A half bottle of Oban 12 yo (a present, though very nice)
        Bushmills 10 yo (another present)

At home we have Laphroaig 10 and Lagavulin 12 (my dad likes Islays) as well as some Macallan and a rather nice Ardbeg.

Where do you get Glenfarclas from? I can never find it.

Oddbins stocks Glenfarclas, though I got mine from the distillery (the only place to get the cask-strength version).

If you like Speyside malts, I'd pick Glenfarclas or Macallan. For Island malts, Lagavulin or Caol Ila.

                    Depends what you're into, really.

I'll try Macallan. I think I've seen it in Hong Kong. The other stuff might be hard to find here. In the mean time, I'll enjoy my 15 and 18 yr old Glenfiddich. It's probably mainstream, but I'm not yet an expert so the Glenfiddich is fine for me.

You'll love Macallan! If you won't, go for Islay malts.

There's nothing wrong with Glenfiddich, but once you really get into single malts, you start craving more complex flavours. Once you get into Island malts, you're doomed because other malts start tasting a bit wimpy in comparison.

In order to appreciate Speyside malts, I take deliberate breaks from Island malts for a few weeks to let my taste-buds re-settle. I end up drinking particular regions going by the seasons.
