The idea is to point out the hypocracy of the republicans (who generally support the veterans above pretty much everything short of the oil business and venerate their service to the country in the military as one of the best things those soldiers could have done). Face facts, you've got a big portion of the country who views homosexuality as a chosen, sinful, deviate behavior which disgusts them. Why would you expect them to be "tactful" or "respectful."

We're still dicking around with evolution in schools, ten commandments statues in state buildings, and comparisons of abortion to the holocaust and genocide in this country, so not only are there tens of millions of people in this country who likely agree with Perry, they're a far more monolithic, "moral issues" driven voting bloc than are those who either openly support gay marriage, or those who really don't care.
