  • Rolling Thunder

I was down on the Mall today and they were having the Rolling Thunder procession for Memorial Day. Pretty impressive. They say that some 300,000 bikes were expected this year, and from what I saw, that sounds about right. All types, from bullet bikes to custom choppers. Most were very loud. The louder the better.

Anybody here been to one of those? Is this the biggest gathering of bikes in the world?
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Once a year my little town in Oregon gets maybe 500 to 1000 bikes at festival time. I think that's alot, very impressive.

    300,000 bikes? I can't imagine.

Every year we have Street Vibrations where umpteen bazillion motorcycles and enthusiasts descend upon the city. God I hate motorcyclists from California (in addition to hating Californian drivers in general):

I don't recall if Rolling Thunder has ever been to Reno, at least not at anything remotely approaching 300,000. I think I would have to kill myself if it did or else stuff cotton balls in my ears and not leave the house for the duration (we live a ways from US 395 but can always hear the motorcycles). A few bikes is fine, but thousands upon thousands? Ugh.

Even a few bikes are annoying. Look at me, I'm loud! Fvcking toddlers.

It's a man sound. I'm sorry, maybe there will be some kind of .. sound convention, and they can put the Win95 boot song for you sissies.

A Harley Davidson's sound is a man's sound, you pansy. Those pissant motorcycles are so ...ahem... "gay."

Not surprisingly, there were very few street bikes. Mostly hogs and its brethren.

They gave away a Harley at the casino last week. 1200cc Burgundy colored low rider. Man, did I ever want that bike. Sadly, I couldn't enter to win since I work there.

I'd have brought it to the Phils where 90cc bikes are the norm. Actually I'd have sold it and I'd be on a plane right now.

I wonder what people in the Phils would think if you pulled up beside them in a decked out chopper.

They would be awe struck. Where I live I'm sure they've never seen the like. In Manila expats have a Harley club, but on Bohol...nothing like it.
