And to get some questions out of the way first:
YES, the E0-stepping Pentium 4 is 64-bit. NO, "total system power" is not representative of CPU power draw.

What's to discuss? It just looks like the D vs the X2 is the same choice people have faced buying PCs for plenty of times...you can pay a lot more to get the absolute best, but it will be a lot cheaper to just get the almost best.
OTOH I think Intel is taking the right route. Lower cost will get people to actually buy it. I can't name any people who would buy a $1,001 processor.
Well I still have the Pentium 4 3GHz (800) which still seems to be serving me just fine...certainly no need for an upgrade yet although this thing is coming up to it's 2nd birthday...
