Illegal immigrants are not counted when figuring out the population of the state (duh; it would sort of be hard to count them) yet their contribution to state GDP is counted...

Straight GDP is a **** comparison.

Especially given that the measure was taken in 2001 at the height of the dollar's ridiculous overvaluation ($CAN/$US in 2001 was about 0.64, which was just plain silly; the current rate of ~0.79 is much more in tune with reality of price differences across the border).

PPP is a slightly better measure, but not perfect by any means.

Income is interesting, but to be a truly useful comparison we need comparable figures for cost of living as well. Anybody wanna Google it up?

Might want to note here that foreign ownership of US assets is much higher than US ownership of foreign assets (and this trend is only increasing), so not all of the US GDP ends up in the hands of Americans...
