I still don't know why sealand doesn't get hit by pirates more often.

Mostly because there's nothing of worth to loot. And Sealand has fairly liberal gun-ownership laws. And it is essential a massive floating fortress. It would be like looting Alcatraz.

Nope. Still part of the US. Although you do get your very own CIA World Factbook entry...

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Actually, the best thing to do with it would be to keep it until the US goes to war with China or the PRK, and then sell it back as an airbase at twice the price you bought it for.

Wasn't there a pretty important early WWII battle there?

I remember something about holding off a small Japanese battle group with a half dozen 5 inch guns and some coconuts...
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

I don't know how important it was, but the Japanese did shell the islands.

It's an unincorporated territory, which means no state law.

I say put in a hotel and casino. You're just 1 1/2 hours from Honolulu by jet.

Put in a shooting range and you'll pull in gun-happy Japanese tourists by the thousands.

And a clothing-optional beach for Americans.

Would you bid for it? I might put in a bid on a lark. If I were to win, what should I do with it?

I would try to make permanent structures that would exist just fine without being visited too much, but which would be "ready to go" when my chartered boat or airplane leaves me and any work crew off. I'm thinking I would need lots of cisterns to gather fresh water. Concrete and steal structures able to withstand the weather and last forever. Solar energy would be the way to go. Satellite connection to the net, etc.
