  • Gilligan's Isle for sale

The US federal government is selling Johnston Atoll, the deserted island whose claim to fame is that it was where the US military stored chemical weapons, tested nuclear weapons, and launched experimental rockets.

625.81 acres. 717 nm southwest of Honolulu. A 10,000 foot runway suitable for landing 747s. No water. All US government building have been dismantled. The golf course is abandoned. Paved roads are in unknown condition.

Would you bid for it? I might put in a bid on a lark. If I were to win, what should I do with it?

I would try to make permanent structures that would exist just fine without being visited too much, but which would be "ready to go" when my chartered boat or airplane leaves me and any work crew off. I'm thinking I would need lots of cisterns to gather fresh water. Concrete and steal structures able to withstand the weather and last forever. Solar energy would be the way to go. Satellite connection to the net, etc.

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

As I understand, all the weapons have been removed.

and that island looks dangeroud during high tide, or god forbid: a tsunami. Even a normal storm will send waves over the entire island it looks like.

              expect to get wet.

I take it you don't fall for that liberal "rising sea levels" crap Dan?
Within weeks they'll be re-opening the shipyards
And notifying the next of kin
                Once again...

The weather for Johnston Atoll is expected to range from highs of 78 degrees to highs of 80 degrees over the next several weeks. The lows are expected to be 78 degrees.

Let's just say that my bets would be hedged should it prove to be a false alarm.

Oops. North island and east island, which are also yours should you win the bid for Johnston Atoll, are manmade. Johnston and Sand Islands are natural.

Fix it up nicely with some palm trees and stuff, and then rent it out for a couple of weeks at a time to stupidly wealthy artists or businessmen who feel the need to get away from things. Or host a Polymeet.
