  • Is a runaway greenhouse effect underway?

Scientists believe a "runaway greenhouse effect", similar to the one which gave Venus teperatures of 900 degrees Celsius, is possible on earth. It seems that water vapour is a much more efficent greenhouse gas than CO2 and if the oceans warm up enough, increased evaporation will produce a "positive feedback loop" which would continue until the oceans literally boil away. One study (linked below) found that this may already have begun.

The most counterintuitive thing I've heard about that is that global warming could cause another ice age.

Why? The North Atlantic current sends more energy to Europe in the form of heat than all the power stations in Europe combined. It's function depends on the salinity of water. Global warming could, in theory, raise temperatures enough to melt enough polar/glacial ice so that the current slows down or shuts off completely. That heat being hand delivered to Europe stops and temperatures here could drop very low. Don't forget, here in the UK, I'm sharing the same latitudes as Moscow. Even southernly Rome is along the same line as Chicago.

It only sounds counterintuitive if you hear the fact as a ten second soundbite and don't get the explanation behind it.
Exult in your existence, because that very process has blundered unwittingly on its own negation. Only a small, local negation, to be sure: only one species, and only a minority of that species; but there lies hope. [...] Stand tall, Bipedal Ape. The shark may outswim you, the cheetah outrun you, the swift outfly you, the capuchin outclimb you, the elephant outpower you, the redwood outlast you. But you have the biggest gifts of all: the gift of understanding the ruthlessly cruel process that gave us all existence [and the] gift of revulsion against its implications.

I believe your explanation is the one I've heard.

bump, you'd think more people would be concerned about the loss of all life on the planet.

Sensationalist BS. there is no way we are going to turn into Venus. It is crap from like this that gives conservatives an excuse to ignore the legitimate data. Most scientists expect an increase of about 2 to 4 degrees Celsius by the end of the century.

                        From the NASA article:
The model may help researchers uncover why Venus experienced a complete runaway greenhouse and lost its water over a period of several hundred million to a billion years.

No one is saying this will happen overnight...

AFAIK the scenario described is possible, scientists just don't yet know why earlier warmer periods with a more pronounced greenhouse effect did not spiral into this sort of destructive feedback loop. I'm not aware of any scientist who would claim that there is no way to convert earth into a venus like inferno. If venus were magically transported to earths orbit it wouldn't cool very much at all. Earth has erything it would need to become a brutally hot venus twin. We just don't yet know why that has never happened here.
