You mean you people actually have many choices?
At one of the schools I've been to we only had choices like Math, English, IT, philosophy and stuff like that
The next school (getting an education in software-enginering) it took us 1½ year before we got to the choices part and out of the 4 "choices" we had 2 was not optional (even though they said so!?!). The last 2 was web-programming (a bit java-scrip, a bit asp.net, etc) and embedded programming. I "only" picked web-programming beause I could see what would happen in the other class: nothing (they didn't learn anything)... of course in the course I took we learned almost nothing, but more than in the other class
Anyway, this year I have been taking courses in sleeping late
good news! i just killed my last econ midterm, scoring 22 points above the minimum for an A and over 70 points above the average. thats enough to put me 25 points above an A cumulative, excluding homework (only 10%, but ive got an A in that too)

Next two years taking:

Adv. Macro

Finance
Economics of Developing Nations
Public Economics
Econometrics
Economic Decisions Within the Firm
2 maths, 2 management, 2 applied economics and 2 economic theory modules. A nice balance I think

Depends what classes they are. Here every subject has 3-4 exams (prelims or mods) in the first year and 8 in the 3rd year (finals). But then we wouldn't have a course in algebra, or differential equations, we'd have one in maths of which those would be a part of it.

Sure it is, but that is a separate question from whether he endorses particular arguments in Book X, or whether or not some of those arguments are intended to be supplemented from elsewhere in the Republic or from other dialogues, or whether you are meant to supply the missing premises yourself.
The general feel I got from reading 3 or 4 dialogues is more like him saying "art is fine, but stop giving it some undue credit as if it was super great and super universal", just like he says that sophists are okay, however we should not take them for the experts they aren't.
