So what if they could detect alcohol say, a week after it was drunk? Am i unfit for work for seven days? Am I likely to turn up to work drunk?

No, because the vast majority of recreational drug/alcohol users are sensible people who know that work and getting leathered just don't mix.

Come off it. Alcohol is very different to coke.

Now we're making progress! How is it 'very different'?

Because people never get addicted to alcohol? Because alcohol doesn't impair motor skills? Because alcohol isn't a "drug"? Because people never feel like drinking whilst on the job?

I'm having trouble seeing the difference you're so clear about, Dauphin. Perhaps you should enlighten us poor rubes...

                Nope.

                I have had no sleep.

I went out to Mississauga this morning to finish the final paperwork for my course.

I have a class to attend tonight at 6 (I am being paid to attend lectures).

So I'm sitting in one of the study lounges at varsity drinking coffee surfing through everyone else's itunes share. I thought I had the most embarrassing music on my computer, but I was so wrong.

I'm so bored that I might watch one of the four Star Wars movies I have on the HD or play Vicky (that means read the Vicky Wiki for a couple of hours in puzzlement).

The guy on the table across from me has a Star Wars DTP with an embarrassingly bad pic of Natalie Portman on it.

                  I'd hit it.

Drug testing is not an invasion of privacy because you give the company permission to invade your privacy-or try to-sucess is not guaranteed.

This law-guarantees that invasion will be sucessfull.

At least HE's joking. Whats your excuse for your malformed argument?

Maybe the fact that the argument is so out there that it wasn't intended to be serious?

You know, you could just append a to every statement I've made thus far.

Ignoring the difference in short term health risks, addictive nature, withdrawal symptons and long term effects of cocaine and alcohol:

Alcohol is not illegal. If you are a person partial to a drink the consequence of having a drink will not result in a criminal warning or conviction. If you are found in possession of coke you are liable for criminal prosecution. This will have direct consequences on your employment, and can disqualify you from numerous positions.

Alcohol is socially acceptable. If you were to have a drink at a works function, say at a meeting with work clients, or with colleagues after work, as many do, you are not causing difficulties for your company or firm by your action of drinking alcohol. If you snort a line you are creating problems for a company were that information to be made public due to that action being socially unacceptable. Consequence of your actions under influence aside.

                          Consider it thus:

Company President drinks a bottle of beer at family BBQ.

Company President snort a line at family BBQ.

                          Which is worse?
One day Canada will rule the world, and then we'll all be sorry.

Faking the test is fraud and fraud is illegal. I have a problem with the tests themselves, even though I don't do illegal drugs anymore.
