All you really need is a swift application of righteous pain from a loving parent with the objective of making you realise that the world doesn't revolve around you and suddenly you would forget all about your syndromes. The symptoms would just disappear. Quite apart from anything else because your arse would be hurting too much.

As I like to tell my kids when they whine or throw tantrums, "Would you like me to give you something to cry about?" Usually the whining miraculously stops immediately.

People are far too focussed on themselves and their problems these days. That's all it is in most cases, an overweening selfishness. That's my opinion.

Of course if the tried and true parenting methods don't work then of course you take a different approach. I would take the kid to see a shrink if there were signs of abnormal reactions to discipline, pressure situations, stress etc. any caring parent would. But we need to know its real first.

This can be applied to teen angst and to whimsical children.

However, I don't see what it has to do with people who have socialization patterns and knowledge-aquisition patterns that are completely different from the norm. I'd actually think that many Aspergers don't even complain about it. What would "whacking them hard" bring?

I hope AH doesn't have any kids because he'll be in jail for child abuse.

                  But seriously, folks....

This is one reason I am such a big advocate of community service. So you had a bad day. You got into a stupid argument over something at work. Life goes on.

But then you go do your service work, and somebody comes in curled up in a ball (after the hysterics and physical shock exhaust them ) because their Mother and Father just got hit by a truck and are dead.

                  Those people have real problems.

Puts it in the proper perspective. Makes you feel like a real
                  ass.

I guess that is an example of the self-serving aspect of community work. But it's there, and a valuable lesson on life and what really matters.

Your opinions are idiotic and indefensible. I am dating someone with Asperger's. It is the closest thing to an alien psychology I have encountered. It has nothing to do with tantrums, or scenery-chewing, or any other crap. People with Asperger's do not draw attention to themselves, but their way of life is very hard to puzzle out or understand.

As I like to tell my kids when they whine or throw tantrums, "Would you like me to give you something to cry about?" Usually the whining miraculously stops immediately.

Your kids do not represent all that there is to know about humanity.

No. Unless being a moody old sod is a "syndrome", I'm ludicrously well-balanced.

The other thing that pisses me off about these syndromes is there is a whole industry of people that indulge this BS and make a living off it. From social workers to teachers and psychologists they all facilitate this crap. They all tell people its okay to be an emotional childish midget.

Let me give you a tip - don't buy into this victim psychosis - stop feeling sorry for yourself, stand up, deal with your problems, get on with your life.

They say I probably could be diagnosed as having Asperger's; I'll have the tests taken in September. On the one hand I think I show most of the symptoms needed for a diagnosis (social ineptness , exceptional linguistic development, motoric problems as a child) but on the other hand I'm not really convinced that it is meaningful to attach that kind of a label to someone's personality, especially as nobody apparently knows what causes Asperger's and what kind of symptoms exactly should be classed as Asperger's symptoms. One could imagine that different factors could lead different people to show Asperger's symptoms and to be diagnosed as being Aspergian. So Asperger's is, I think, to a high degree, a social construct. There's a big Asperger's boom here in Finland right now and a lot of people are being diagnosed. People speculate a lot about which influential historical figures could have had Asperger's (Newton, Feynman, Hesse...) and the whole thing has the feeling of being a fashion phenomenon.

Wasn't your point that such people don't have a problem at all?
