          Actually, the reason they designed it that way (officially) is because included in the cost they have to submit to whatever group approves these things includes the cost of mission control - so if they pick a worst-case scenario and say "it'll only last 90 days", it cuts the forcasted costs. Then, when the worst-case scenario doesn't happen, they go "wow, for just a bit extra money we can double or triple the scientific value of this thing that cost millions upon millions of dollars!" and from a funding standpoint, it's a no-brainer.

            i just read that the rover is out of the sanddune and on it marry way to explore the surface of mars and taste some of that great marsian beer they have over there
