Seriously, it's because unions refer to their members as brothers and sisters. Amongst commies, however, we tend to refer to each other as comrade.

and at least in the Railroad business even management (if they were at all hip) knew this - as in - "That would require a change in the work rules, and the brothers probably wont accept it without concessions on other issues" - if you didnt know who "the brothers" were in that context, you were seriously out of it.
