Can't do that. How could anybody certify anything as 100% safe? There's always a chance of something going wrong.

However, we have better testing than the US does. We have better tracking of the animals than the US does. We have an inspection system that keeps diseased animals out of the food chain. The USDA has said there is no scientific reason to keep the border closed.

Considering that US cases of mad cows can't be verified or dismissed because your regulators 'lost the brains', your industry has no idea of the history of many animals since you lack an adequate tracking system, and the from what I've heard your inspection practices at kill floors leave much to be desired...

I'd be wanting to be assured it was Canadian beef I was about to eat, and not some mad Sally from Texas.

Btw, cows don't really 'roost', do they?

This could be a good thing for American slaughterhouse workers. Right now, the pace of work is so high that workers routinely suffer numberous repetititve motion injuries, as well as slicing themselves up something fierce. Most of these workers are immigrants (and many of them undoucmented). If they move to Canada to work, they're more likely to be protected by unions and real government regulations of work safety as well as food safety.

While the Canadians might not be able to certify their beef as MCD free, I'm willing to bet their beef is far more likely to be feces free. One of the first things the Bush administration did when coming in to office was lower the regulatations on the amount of fecal matter, such that there are less inspectors and that meat contamintated with feces merely need to be hosed off.

All things considered, I'd prefer Canadian beef slaughtered and processed in Canada.

Unions, che. It is unlikely that illegals would find jobs in the meat packing industry.

Incidently, a cousin of mine wanted to ship the choice cuts of his own beef to the states. No hormones. No chemicals of any kind (he says chemicals kill the bugs in the soil and that's bad). Then the mad cow came along. Oh well.

Still, I wonder if there would still be a market in posh restaurants in Manhattan for grass fed, open range, one hundred percent Alberta beef.

Depends. Body needs about 30% calories by fat, and on Atkins, fat is good, cuz it fills you up quicker, and you end up eating less calories overall.

some fats are bad -- there is this thingy called cholesterol
