    This is really old news.
All good studies I've read about revelations 13 say that some texts say it's 616 but mosts texts say 666.
apparantly another text has been found that reads 616 and some ignorant journalist jumped on it.

Besides that, 666 is not the number of satan. It's the number of men. Oh, and 616 is most obviously a copyist error.

And if you wonder if the bible is infallable, it's not. it's written by fallable humans.

Fundy protestants have yet to understand it.

I've been called a fundy more then once on this board.
Though that means nothing since according to some people everybody who disagrees with them is a fundamentalist.

Oh, I should make clear that I believe that the message of the bible is infallable though.

If you believe that the message is universal, but that the wording, and specific details aren't, then you're not a fundamentalist. By my definition at least.

I mean, do you think that it is God's word (and thus right) to stone adulterous women to death at the gates of the city?

I think we're departing from the topic.
Though, to answer your question. In those days it was the best way to deal with problems in society.
Though it's not applicable to our time.

But the bible even clearly states that itself.

satanists responded coolly to the new "Revelation". Peter Gilmore, High Priest of the Church of Satan, based in New York, said: "By using 666 we're using something that the Christians fear. Mind you, if they do switch to 616 being the number of the beast then we'll start using that."

What a drab and uninteresting looking city. Is there no color in China as well?

Of course not. The first thing we communists do when taking over a country is remove all the color.
Christianity: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree...

Don't the numbers signify (greek) letters?
Or was it the letters were translated to numbers?

                        I believe it.

Skopje & Pristina were full of those dull unpainted concrete boxes which typified communist architecture. It's like even paint cost to much money for those commies.

Is there a place called Oxyrhynchus?
I watched you fall. I think I pushed.

                            Something close to that :

http://www.felicity.com.au/paper-end.htm (actually a quite funny page)

In the Greek numerical system, the first eight characters of the alphabet, plus a special symbol for 6, represented the number 1 to 9. As John, then, sat working at his writings on the island of Patmos (Revelation 1:9), he looked out towards Asia Minor and saw within his purview one of the strong contenders for the faith of the people, the cult of Attis, a cult, like Mithraism, especially abhorrent to Christians for it so nearly resembled their own! The number 616, tattooed on the foreheads and hands of stubborn idolaters, translated, meant ATTIS (the Greek letters adding up as 1+300+300+5+10 = 616). It was even given in the dative case, as would be required in a votive inscription.
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

                            Steven Weinberg
