  • Brooks Robinson decries steroid enhanced records.

I would recommend that we give an asterisk to all records made in the '90s that have anything to do with strength.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) -- Hall of Fame third baseman Brooks Robinson said Friday that baseball stars of his generation are upset that their place in history could be diminished because new records might have been set by users of illegal substances.

Robinson said he finds it troubling that some baseball players have turned to steroids to help advance their careers.

    ...

Robinson said he knows in his heart which players have been taking steroids.

"I don't have a lot of sympathy for the guys who do that," he said. "We are a pretty forgiving country. I think I know who did steroids and their records will never ring true to me. I think it is troubling for a lot of us."

Robinson played 23 seasons for the Orioles and became known as one of the best fielding third basemen before his career ended in 1977. He said the game has changed a lot since then. Not only has youth participation in baseball declined, but free agency and large contracts have also changed the dynamics of the sport at the professional level, Robinson said.

"It's a whole new game with the money out there," he said. "It's trying to keep up with the Joneses. They figure, 'This [steroids] is the way I can do it."'

Robinson said that, when he played, he never saw a teammate or opponent use steroids. He said that some baseball players would take "greenies" -- amphetamines that would provide a boost of energy.

"That's the only thing I saw," he said.

Robinson, who lives in Baltimore, said he believes strongly that steroids help players hit the ball longer distances.

"It's a matter of just getting the bat on the ball," he said. "That's what it's all about. Getting your bat through the zone with some speed. You see what those guys do. Frank Robinson was quoted saying, 'Hey, I am going to be way down on the list if this keeps going on.' They don't like it."

Robinson said that, with the growth in the number of teams, there has been a dilution of good pitching and questions about the legitimacy of the numbers that are being put up in the current era, which has heightened the generational divide in baseball.

"I think every player looks back on every decade and says, 'Those guys weren't as good as we were.' But that's human nature, I guess."

Too bad for him. His generation upset records by excercizing, which previous generations didn't do.

Then I recommend we give an asterisk to all records made in the '60s that have anything to do with anything, seeing as how speed makes you a better player.

That's not even counting that it has been reported that pitchers used steroids at a greater rate than batters.

Spot on... and they used 'greenies' (speed) like multi-vitamins.

Ah Brooks Robinson... hypocrite. What about players from the 30s who said your contemporaries records don't ring true to them? What do you say to them?

You should consider, however, that when many of these sports were invented, they were invented by gentlemen atheletes, people who were not full time atheletes nor who excercized. It was just supposed to be your raw, natural talent and strengths. No excercizing, ne stretching, etc. This was considered beneath the true sportsman, and what seperated him from laborers and other people who used their muscles for a living. The originators of baseball would be scandalized to see the musclemen of yesterday, let alone today.

I'm not saying I agree with the use of steroids, since most people don't get the money to compensate them for the damage they do. Ametuer atheletes shouldn't be using them, but I don't really have a problem with professional athelets using.

American sports places too much emphasis on stats and records IMHO, if you are amonst the best at a given time and won championships then thats enough.

Although stats are creeping into British sports we rarely use them to decide who the 'best' is, thats where judgement comes in.

I used to wonder why the NFL would have a stronger drug policy than baseball. But then I listen to the supposed fans like Imran and have my answer.

The NFL's steroid policy is kind of silly as well... people get around it all the time. Look at the three Carolina Panthers who were taking steroids before the SuperBowl. It was only found out now. The NFL's policy looks good, but players know how to get around it.

I wouldn't be surprised if most NFL players were on something.

After all, Romo basically announced that he was on steroids his entire career.

Well, we really don't have an honest commissioner anyway. We have a shill of management.

We can expect a whitewash of this whole sordid affair.

If I were McCain, though, I would again raise the issue of the antitrust exemption unless and until baseball has a truly independent commissioner with real power over both the owners and the players. Such a commissioner would have laid down the rules, not negotiated them on behalf of management with the union.

They should get rid of the anti-trust exemption for sports.

Sports don't have an anti-trust exemption. Only baseball does. The NFL, remember, lost an anti-trust case to the USFL.

And how in the WORLD is the NFL Commission 'independant'? Tagliabue and Rozell before him were both from the ownership. The great success of both of them was in breaking the players union, after all.
