J, to those who have to read their history books to learn what I experienced first hand, it might seem as if they were talking to father time when they talk to me. When I was very young, you could talk to people who had vivid memories of WWI, and there were people still alive (although I don't remember talking to any) who remembered the Civil War.
Vietnam was the war of my generation. It divided this nation almost as bad as the Civil War. When people tell you that that war was lost at home, it is true. But it is also true that Johnson's strategy (or was it MacNamara's) of gradual escallation and half measures that was more that f*cked. One really has to wonder whether Kennedy would have done anything different. He seemed to be a lot smarter and bolder than Johnson. But, Kennedy did screw up the Bay of Pigs.
