  • Help with CD drive

    Allie's CD drive strikes again!

A year ago, it was just not opening up. Now it's not closing. Each time I close it, whether by pressing the button or pushing the tray back in, it stays shut for all of 5 seconds and then opens up again. This is true whether I put in a CD or not.

Does anybody know how I can find what application is using the drive, and then terminate it? I've restarted the computer and closed the drive just as the computer was shutting down. The moment the computer's back on again, the drive continues to exhibit this behavior.

    Suggestions? Advice?

I will be getting a new laptop in a few weeks (when my little brother can be arsed to send it) but until then I need my CD drive back!

Try removing the drive & booting up without it, shut down, reinstall it, and boot up again. See if it continues to act flaky. You could get a new CD drive, they're super cheap these days. Just don't buy it from Radio Shack or anything, get it online.

I join the question, since my drive has gone into slow motion or something. It opens and closes real slow.

      Is there some diagnostics tool?

Any other suggestions? I'll save up the disassembling until there's no other option. Does anybody know how to check if there's any application using my CD drive?

I know I did burn a CD fairly recently, but that normally doesn't cause that sort of problem.

Right-click "my computer" Select "properties' Select the hardware tab. Click on the "device manager" button. Scroll down to your CD drive (expand "DVD/CD-Rom devices" if necessary) and right-click. Select "uninstall." The drive will uninstall. Then right-click on the computer icon at the top of the chain and select "scan for hardware changes." The CD drive should re-install (and you should not need your driver disk, since the drivers are already on your computer, but have it ready just in case). If that does not solve the problem, check back here and let us know.

With how much CD drives cost nowadays, it could well be easier to get a new one

Try downloading the newest drivers for it, though I suspect it's a hardware problem.

Run msconfig, Spybot Search and Destroy, and Ad-Adware, preferably in safe mode. If you have a virus scanner, use that too.

UR, thanks. I have run msconfig, Spybot S&D, and Ad-Aware. The CD drive is still malfunctioning, but I'll bet your good advice helped me get rid of lots of other crap nonetheless.

Likewise, Grumbler, I'm going to give your advice a try and see what turfs up. Wish me luck...

If this doesn't work, I may well have to take this little git into the back yard and crush it very tally and mercilessly.

And then get a new one.

I uninstalled it and the drive STILL won't stay shut!

                          WTF!

It may be time for me to bring the bitch out
