It looks dumb. By dumb I mena boring.

By boring, I mean it looks like they are having fun, and will force their friends and family to watch it to which they will nod, laugh and fake interest by commenting on the production value of such a "good film"

You are correct. It was also maxed at 20d6.

I stand corrected. Didn't 2nd edition max it at 20d6? I seem to remember playing in the 70's with unlimited d6s.

During battles they'll usually fight according to rules. What the rules are depends on the group - sometimes it may be something similiar to a pen and paper RPG, or they may be rules derived from martial arts, like fencing. There'll usually be judges standing on the side to make sure everyone is obeying the rules, and to tell people when they're dead if they don't know it already.

But, of course, the most important thing is roleplaying... when everyone is playing their role appropriately, there is probably little need for judges - people will concede when they know that they should.

This isn't LARPing. It's SCA. I'm ashamed I even know that.

Do they really care about listeners anyway? I was under the impression that this movie would be confined to the LARP scene.

LARP = Live Action Role Playing
SCA = Society for Creative Anachronism

SCA does the stuff in that video, try to rebuild period armor and "weapons" and holds battles and "weapons" demonstrations, etc. The weapons are wooden and padded so no one can get seriously hurt. IIRC, Lefty Scaevola is a SCAer, as is my best friend.

It's kinda like people who do historical reenactments of various battles. I'm sure you have Napoleonic War reactments around Europe. We have Revolutionary War and Civil War reenactors in the US.

I was wondering if it was medieval-fantasy or medieval-realism they were reenacting. I still can't say for sure whether their movie has a historical or ahistorcal basis.

But since the whole thing doesn't seem to be aimed at an audience, and there's no suspension of disbelief at all (the padding of the weapon and the bits of modern clothing are for all to see), I would rather think of LARP.

It's a little of column and a little of column b. It's not historical re-enactment, but everything must be reality based. So no, "Lightningbolt! Lightningbolt! Lightningbolt!" If the battle is supposed to take place in 958, no full suits of armor, etc.

LARPing is based on games. SCA has rules, but it isn't a game.

A lot of battle re-enactment isn't aimed at audiences either, but for the fun of the actors. I doubt many people go to see the re-enactment of the Battle of Oulee in northern Florida (only important battle fought in this state during the Civil War).
