In a move that shows the Vatican is trying to appeal to younger Catholics, Vatican TV has announced the premiere of “Pope My Ride.” Each week, a group of Vatican experts will take a car and renovate it.
“Does your car need some major work? Are you embarrassed to pick up your date because of your ride?” asks Cardinal Laurencio Bastrillón in a promotional spot for “Pope My Ride.” “Fear no more. Vatican TV wants to give you the hottest and safest car on the block.”
“Pope My Ride” combines work usually seen on MTV’s “Pimp My Ride” where a viewer’s barely drivable, rusty-floored, crumple-fendered car is transformed into a paragon of automotive art and electronic gadgetry. The twist in the Vatican TV show is that workers add the distinctive-looking bulletproof booth to the car.”
“Not only will our young viewers look cool with the way we fix up the car, but they’ll be safe in their bulletproof booth,” says Cardinal Bastrillón. “The other cool thing is that you can stand up when you’re being driven around too. That’s really cool.”
Vatican TV also plans on premiering a new reality show “Francisco and Nicholas.” The program follows a priest and an altar boy during their first year together in the rectory.
