a half lira note!!! wow, that would be what 20th of an old shekel? which is what of a NIS? Kewl.

Az - last time I was in Eretz, the Shekel had just been introduced, and lira coins still circulated. It was the height of the inflatziya. And yeah, the Likud folks had taken away all those old bolshie looking notes.

I would like it if the new $1 coins became popular, I hate it when my crumpled up bill won't go into the vending machine.

Oh, and the Minnesota quarter is out.

of course the above author is, properly, using rural proletariat for landless rural wage laborers. I agree its problematic for Kibbutzniks.

                HELL NO!

I can't remember a single good Likud year, EVER, and there have been quite a few Likud years in the last 2 decades.

rak lo likud - one of the snazzier bumper stickers from that year.

Im Dayan, KEN! was a nice jingle, but didnt really work out.

                          (no one eyed smilies, huh?)

actually Dayan was pretty old at the time. This was the 1981 election - Dayan ran on his own ticket, and only picked up 2 MKs, IIRC.

The highlight of the year was a French Jewish businessman in flight from fraud charges, who ran for the knesset on his own list to gain parliamentary immunity from extradition. Flatto-Sharon IIRC. (no relation)

The lowlights were rumbling ethnic conflict, with mizrahi youth harassing Labour rallies, and the victory by the first nationalist-religious coalition ('77 having still had centrists playing a big role in the coalition)
