Out of curiosity, what's this used for?

Organizing cultural events and eating, mostly. It's not a union in any traditional sense.

There are spaces to study but no chalkboards, so it's pretty damn useless for studying any real academic subject.

Well ****. That's what I'd be protesting for.

"As the title of the thread suggests, this is more about democracy in our public universities, rather than the room itself."

If I say, "this is more about x than y," that doesn't mean it is only about x. Christ Dino, did you just fall on your head?

We had a nice student lounge in our department but there was no department teachers' lounge though the university did have a beach front hotel like teacher's lounge complete with swimming pool and large (free) hotel rooms for visiting staff. We also had a TGIF on the department roof top patio complete with beer and BBQ each Friday. BBQ was on the department but beer was on the students though usually we'd all pitch in and buy a keg.

I guess it's true: different department means different personalities. ( with architecture and arts being the biggest bunch of stoners, and management organizing the best parties, and having the prettiest chicks. )

That sounds great. We have something similar, but only once a semester. Some of us are trying to make 'em more frequent.

I'm jealous. The closest we have here are dorm parties. The academic departments would never do that.
