Out of curiosity, what's this used for?
Organizing cultural events and eating, mostly. It's not a union in any traditional sense.
There are spaces to study but no chalkboards, so it's pretty damn useless for studying any real academic subject.

We had a nice student lounge in our department but there was no department teachers' lounge though the university did have a beach front hotel like teacher's lounge complete with swimming pool and large (free) hotel rooms for visiting staff. We also had a TGIF on the department roof top patio complete with beer and BBQ each Friday.
