DC has a majority black population, but they sure didn't go to the game today. It was like a segregation-era golf club.
Don't black people watch baseball anymore?
Good crowd on hand. In comparison to Baltimore, it's a lot more white collar. RFK is a lot better ballpark than I thought it would be, even though it's really old. Few home runs, lots of doubles. I got the $10 upper level outfield seats and they were pretty good. I could have done the $7 seats and been happy too.
They really need to get the concessions sorted, on the other hand. Less Miller Light, more Foggy Bottom Ale. More sausage, less hot dogs.
The DC area has the largest black middle class of any metro area in the US. They've got the money for a $10 seat and a few brews.
Another interesting thing was that there were a lot fewer kids than I expected. Certainly a lot fewer than in the crowd in Baltimore. More young singles.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891
I agree that black people don't really go to baseball much anymore. I went to the Braves-Mets game last Sunday and a great majority of the crowd was white, even though Atlanta has a very high black population.

Blacks don't go to baseball anymore. I saw a blurb about it on the news the other night. A black guy was trying to start a bunch of inner city black kids playing the game in order to bring blacks back to the game. I guess not many new players are black these days either according to what was being said. Don't know why.
yeah I watched the same blurb on NBC Nightly news.
Popularity is waaay down. There are 2 teams that have no black players whatsoever!!
I hate pro sports in general but I reserve a special burning dislike for those premodonnas in Baseball. Not only is the game boring but they are so full of themselves and dispite the outragous salaries of both the players and the owners they'll still screw over the fans and the season ticket holders at the drop of a hat. They talk big about community service but the reality is they are one big drain on the community with their constant extorsion attempts and "give us more money or we'll move the team to another city" routine.
Then there is the false "don't use drugs" campaign while most of the best players are shooting up before the game. Both the teams and the players' union both try to avoid manditory testing because they know a bunch of big names would get caught. If I have to take drug tests at work then why should they get a free walk? Screw them!
I say let's eliminate their anti-trust exemption and then let every city who wants in the league get a team that way there'd be no more blackmail and the games likely won't cost as much.
Maybe the black residents of DC like exciting sports...

Yeah, seriously, baseball? It's nearly as boring as cricket.

Cricket is about drinking in the sun, there's no actual sporting interest.
Mind you I think baseball is the same - see the Simpsons episode where Homer gives up beer.
