Standard of living is a far more important criterion for judgement. As Agathon said, you rave on about your economic model but how well does that filter down to the general populace?Originally posted by Drake Tungsten
Many would consider your economic model to be lagging behind a large proportion of the western world actually...
And those people are stupid. Asia is where America's competition is coming from.Speaking of Erith:

yeah, thats what Friedman said too. India, China, Southeast Asia, Japan to a smaller extent. it would be interesting to see how China stacks up to the US when they get rid of their peg.And those people are stupid. Our economy is rapidly restructuring, moving into the areas in which we have a comparative advantage. His new books says America is facing stiffer and stiffer competition. And even better, get this: he says that globalisation isnt a 'race to the bottom' its a 'race to the top' and america is losing its competitive advantage.I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891
