I remember visiting a friend in Boston a few years ago and picking up a copy of the Globe. The paper had a good reputation nationally, and a lot of its editorial writers were nationally syndicated. I was sorely dissappointed with the Globe though. There wasn't much to the thing, and the quality of the news it did have was weak. Not nearly as good a paper as the Detroit Free Press or the Denver Post of that era, yet a lot more famous for some reason.

I kind of felt the same about the San Francisco Chronical. It had a reputation for in depth (if liberal) reporting and for having reporters who really dug to get the real story instead of just accepting what ever the parties PR machines put out. Unfortunately, it was so and expensive paper and the paper was kind of short.
In my opinion the best paper out west is the Los Angeles Times.

Whether true or not, I believe the article raises an important issue about Canada today.

You can't complain about the volume of the L.A. Times, even if you don't care for the editorial slant. I could make a house out of the Sunday edition.
