  • the 10 commandments revisited

My interpretation of the 10 commandments

    1. 'You shall have no other gods before Me.'
    1. Believe in yourself!

    2. 'You shall not make for yourself a carved image--any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.'
    2. Stay realistic!

    3. 'You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain.'
    3. Don't talk bad about people behind their back

    4. 'Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.'
    4. Enjoy your life (at least once every week).

    5. 'Honor your father and your mother.'
    5. Keep in mind the people who enable your style of life

    6. 'You shall not murder.'
    6. Don't kill, except when your own life is in danger

    7. 'You shall not commit adultery.'
    7. Don't betray/exploit the ones who love you/who put trust in you

    8. 'You shall not steal.'
    8. Don't take more than you give (that produces a lot of trash of course).

    9. 'You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.'
    9. Don't lie to hurt others

    10. 'You shall not covet your neighbour's house; you shall not covet your neighbour's wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbour's.'
    10. Don't steal, not even in your mind! (Women or employees are not subjected to be stealable as they are not posessions and can decide for their own)

I think there should be much more than ten commandments. Ten might have been a good number for ancient times, when most people couldn't count higher. But for today with computers and stuff it's pathetic. There should be, let's say, 500 of them. Then they also could air dumb tv shows like "The top 100 commandments" etc.

Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing?

You forget: tablets of stone were only a certain size back then, and God didn't think that Moses would be able to read 10 point Times New Roman.

Funny you asked. This is the case of Judaism; it has 613 commandments.

                        OMG what a stupid list!

                        157. Not to have homosexual sexual relations
                        158. Not to have homosexual sexual relations with your father
                        159. Not to have homosexual sexual relations with your father's brother
I guess 157 doesn't logically include 158 and 159. Anyway, they forgot my grandfather!

                        164. Don't keep a third-generation Egyptian convert from marrying into the Jewish people
                        600. Not to forget Amalek's atrocities and ambush on our journey from Egypt in the desert
                        601. Not to dwell permanently in Egypt
                        the egypts are coming!

This is only because people will continue to find loopholes to sin, and exploit them.

                              Which ones?

there is actually another set of ten commandments.

                              1. You shall not prostrate yourself unto any other god
                              2. you shall not make for yourself gods of molten metal
                              3. six days shall you till, but on the seventh shall you rest
                              4. The festival of unleavened bread shall you observe
                              5.and the festival of harvesting
                              6. and the festival of ingathering at the new year
                              7. everything which opens the womb is mine
                              8. You shall not slay the blood of my sacrifice together with leaven
                              9. Nor shall the sacrifice of the passover festival remain till morning
                              10. you shall not boil a kid in its mothers milk (goat).

there, of course, were multiple sects of judaism, this one is from a prominant sect that existed before the current 10 commandments were codefied.

also, there are more than ten commandments.
technically there are 613 commandments, given by go, to follow.
the first one is be fruitful and multiply (found in genesis).
                              the first

                              {edit: ooops, someone else already mentioned the 613 commandments}
I would rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal labotamy
