  • April 15th Blues

Well, it's that time of the year to pull out the tax forms and records and contemplate suicide.

My W-2 has again gone into hiding as it does practically every year. I can find everything from my employer from the months previous and the months afterwards, but nooooo W-2. This tells me I separated it out and put it somewhere where I couldn't possibly lose it. (Please see my signature below.)

Once again, I'll be filing for an extension.

You should have done them at the beginning of February like I did (the day I got my forms in the mail)

Wait. You don't do your taxes in February?

Why wait? I mean, I know that some forms can come in late, but at least if you do them early and wait, when one extra 1099 finally meanders its way into your mailbox, all you have to do is enter it into a mostly completed form.

        I agree with KH.

Got my $2,500 back from the gov't weeks ago already.

I don't think you have to file an extension. You can file without it and tell the IRS that you are waiting for it. There's another form you have to fill out, and you estimate the numbers on your W-2. Then when your W-2 comes you file more papers.

It's pretty hard to end up owing the government money, so why let them hang on to your refund any longer than they have to?

I sent mine in February 3rd. I'm still waiting for my return. It was approved, but because I filed an injured spouse form, they have to recalculate the return by hand. I should be getting my return sometime this week.

Actually, I think I'm on firm legal ground to exclude them. I'm a non-US resident and the poker winnings are non-US source income (the company that runs the site I frequent is registered in Canada and runs its servers and tech support out of the Carribbean). I don't owe US taxes on non-US source income. Theoretically I should probably pay the Canadian government something, but I'm just not going to file this year.

Are you still a Canadian resident since if you are "resident" elsewhere, you wouldn't owe anythig to Canada either. I looked into this when I considered a job opportunity in Qatar . . . By becoming a "resident" of Qatar I could have paid no taxes at all ( Qatar apparantly has no income tax at all)

I am a Canadian resident. Strangely enough, I'm also a Maryland resident

Same situation I'm in. I'm both an Ontario and Alberta resident, I get to choose which taxes to pay.

                          Hah.

Yeah. I'm not sure if I still have provincial residence anywhere. I don't particularly care, either. I'll start paying Canadian taxes again when I move back to Canada.
