This is like those guys who stole a bridge in croatia(?). If they are able to pull it off, they damn well deserve to enjoy the fruits of their work without anyone butting in. If you succesfully spam and make 24 million dollars in short amount of time, you have the right to enjoy the riches and not have anyone dragging you to court. You should be in the cover of Time Magazine and the hottest guest for all talk shows. No no... I'm serious. Think about it. Make 24 million with spamming. Ethical or not, this is a HUGE achievement. The effort, the style, the strategy. This is like someone saying, well, join our pyramid scam and make all the money in the world, and then someone actually makes 24 million!! What do you say to that? I say congratulations sir, you are a bastard but you have the right to be a bastard, go on, greatness awaits you!

But Jeremy Jaynes won't have to begin serving time right away. The judge ordered the sentence deferred until an appeals court deals with constitutional issues raised by Virginia's tough anti-spam law.

It was the first felony prosecution in the U.S. relating to the growing problem of spam.

Jaynes was convicted of sending millions of unsolicited e-mails that peddled pornography or sham products, such as the "FedEx refund processor" that supposedly allowed people to earn $75 an hour from home.

Prosecutors said Jaynes received 10,000 credit card orders in one month for the processor, each for $39.95 US.

Jaynes was prosecuted under a 2003 Virginia law that prohibits the mass sending of unsolicited e-mails when the origin is masked.

Virginia asserted jurisdiction because the e-mail traffic was routed through AOL's servers in Virginia.

A jury had recommended a nine-year sentence when Jaynes was convicted in November.

The prosecution had asked for the maximum 15 years. Prosecutors said Jaynes was making $500,000 US a month from his spamming activities and had assets of $24 million US.

          Holy crap. A few things:

9 years? I hate spam as much as the next guy, but that seems excessive.

Secondly, he was making 500 000$ a month? He had assets worth 24 million? I'm impressed.
This is old news, I think.

How do you steal a bridge?

Kuci, well yeah, exactly. That requires HARD WORK and extreme balls. There was an article about it in here like a year ago or so.. one day there was a bridge, then the other day it was gone! I say if you can steal a bridge, you can keep it.

Zkribbler, ok ok I didn't read the actual OP further than the last paragraph of it. It seems the spam included selling something bogus etc... OK that one is definitely not cool anymore, well neither is spam but I thought this money was made through spam advertising of real products etc. OK, freeze assets. I am sorry, you were correct and I was wrong.

                The bridge story:

In one single night, a group of Croats (proper term for Croatians?) brought their toolboxes and totally dismantled a road bridge, and sold the scrap metal the next day.

                The spam story:

9 fckin years!?? Rapists and murderers can get away with less than nine years. I mean, I know he's going to be one of those "released in six weeks on good behavior" fellows, but something like a fine. Jailtime doesn't make sense for this guy.

mrmitchell, yeah that was the story . I mean, it's illegal and certainly there's going to be trouble for all kinds of folks because of that crime, but you have to wonder yourself, the determination of it. That kind of stuff, I just have to admire instead of judge them. How can you not love the story?

He should get 20 years in prison plus 50 millions dollars of fine. That will teach those spammers a good lesson.

Bkeela, right.. but that's the problem with the Nigerian letters. I mean hardly anyone actually believes them, let alone send money, right? But the rare individuals who do, it makes it all worthwhile, and that's what they're shooting for. You don't have to make the perfect hustle to screw everyone, just get the few and make it count.

9 years in jail? I doubt he'll even stay there for a year and then he'll be back in the bussiness... I wouldn't be suprised if he also gets to keep the money

They should just take all his money and give it to anti-spam organisations
Then they should through him in a jail for at least 5 years

Still a rapist can get much less time - so yeah its seems a little rough?

So just raise the time rapists gets to stay in jail to at least 20 years and everybody's happy
This space is empty... or is it?

I'm not familiar with monkey-bludgeoning homoerotica... and I've read and seen plenty.
