  • So, we'll see. Personally, I don't think Harper and Duceppe can pull the government down. A couple of Tories are too ill to attend the House. Add to that Parish says she'll back the Libs and Kilgour has run off to Africa 'until further notice', and I don't think there are enough opposition votes to kill the government in May.

I think it is. A bunch of soft nationalists, pissed at the Libs because of Adscam, who have been given a way to let out some steam.
      What?

That's new. Last I heard he was in line to bury Martin's govt., ASAP.

If that is so, count the summer election project as deader than the Socreds.

As the Albertan you are speaking of...

Canada mistreats any and all who are opposed to the Liberals if they are returned to power under these circumstances.

It'll still be pretty ****ed up if the Liberals form the next government.

                                CBC News

VANCOUVER – In a major switch, Independent Surrey-North MP Chuck Cadman says he's now considering voting to support Prime Minister Paul Martin's minority government in a non-confidence vote next month.

Cadman is one of three Independent MPs in the House of Commons, and his vote could keep the Liberal government in power.

The Liberals have 131 MPs and the Speaker, who votes to break ties. With the support of the 19 New Democrats, the Liberals would have 150 votes in the 308-seat House of Commons.

With the support of the three Independents, the Liberal government would have 153 votes.

The Conservatives and Bloc Quebecois have a total of 153 votes, but two Conservative MPs who are battling cancer may not be able to show up for the vote.

On Monday, Cadman had said he was planning to vote against the Liberals and force an election – saying that was what his constituents wanted him to do.

But he says since then he's received about 80 e-mails and phone calls from constituents who don't want a snap election, calling on Cadman to vote with the government.

"That certainly has to be the way that I'm considering leaning. I will have to consider my own views at some point, but that becomes secondary to the constituents," he says.

"And if I feel there's a good representation and a good consensus of constituents that want me to vote a certain way then I'm obligated to do that."

There have been reports that Prime Minister Martin is planning to talk with Cadman to try to convince him to support the Liberal government. But the Surrey MP says he hasn't heard from the PM.

He also says his constituents' opinions will hold more weight than anything that Martin might have to say.

"I don't like the idea of making deals. It's not my style. And it's not a matter of what it's going to take to convince me. Again I have to go back to what I'm hearing from people here in Surrey-North. That's basically what matters."

Cadman says he will continue to monitor e-mails and calls from his constituents up until the non-confidence vote is taken on May 18.
