              its about time.

At our synagogue the bar/bat mitzvah kids get a gift from their class, a donation to the charity of their choice. POTM chose Darfur relief for half of hers - no prompting from me (the other half for the an enviro group). Nearly brought tears to my eyes - this kid GETS it.

I hope the Chinese are too shamed to veto action.

You realize you're talking about China right? "Shame" won't factor into any decision they make, given their status as repeat offender on Human Rights violation lists.
The cake is NOT a lie. It's so delicious and moist.

Ok, replace shame with "desire not to be too out in the open about their willingness to protect every 2 bit genocidaire for the sake of denying UNSC jurisdiction over ethnic cleansing and human rights, and for the sake of oil"

I mean theyve violated HR, but they dont do stuff like this, not lately anyway.

They just can't vote for it without undermining their position that Human Rights is an "internal matter".

Peacekeepers would have been sent weeks ago if it wasn't for the US threatening to veto the resolution because it called for war-crime suspects to be tried in the International Criminal Court. All the other members of the Security Council were in favour of using the ICC, all except the US.

So the US was playing politics while people were dying in Sudan.

They seem to be in good stead with the other UNSC members (China & Russia) who opposed doing anything if that is the case.

The resolution passed Thursday will send troops to southern Sudan and to Darfur.

UN officials say that the security situation in the south is worse than in Darfur.

                              From the IHT
"The Security Council passed a resolution establishing a 10,000-member peacekeeping force for Sudan to reinforce a peace agreement in the south of the country and to lend assistance in the conflicted Darfur region in the west."

Yup, the US was right up there with China and Russia blocking action that could save lives.

But the Security Council has decided to give into the US blackmail and voted to send peacekeepers while leaving the question of trying war criminals to later.
