  • Video Games are becoming boring

Maybe I'm just getting old but doesn't it seem like video games are turning into just a rehash of the same old ideas with slightly better graphics? When I was young I can remmeber playing games like Pirates, Pool of Radiance, and Space Invaders for days and days straight with barely a nap or a meal without ever getting bored. Now days I only buy two or three games per year because I'm just not interested in the RTS or FPS games that seem to dominate the market but even those few games seem to be boring me now. The last games II bought were Hearts of Iron 2, Pirates!, Europa Universalis 2, and Civ 3: PTW and none of those seem all that interesting to me any more.

Hearts of Iron 2 would be interesting if the AI wasn't worthless and the MP wasn't so unstable as to be unplayable so maybe I might play that one again after a few more patches, however, it's been 2-3 months and Paradox has only released one tiny patch so it seems Paradox is no longer putting serious effort into patching their games. EU2 has by far the most replay value of any game I've ever owned but it's been out for three years now so it's starting to get old. Pirates was fun the first 2-4 games but every game is the same so it has no replay value once you've maxed out the points. Civ3 has always sucked the royal donkey penis and I just bought it out of loyalty to Civ1 & 2. I honestly enjoyed CTP2 more then I enjoyed Civ3.

What gives? Am I to blame for not liking the games on sale or is the industry to blame for failing to come out with enteresting games and instead just releasing a bunch of buggy FPSes?

I was looking forward to Paradox's release of Diplomacy but the more I read about it the more convinced I am they are going to screw it. I'm not very interested in buying a game called diplomacy which has nothing to do with the real diplomacy game.

      hmm...

I was going to say "Heretic"

but since I recently (as in last friday) just bought HoI2 and Pirates, I have to be troubled by your statements

as I have already seen weaknesses in the AI (and was trying to figure out how to play it multiplayer)

Tubes told me once you beat the game it gets boring and you move on though he also stated that you can bet the game again in a differnt way. I dont get it but oh well. If you ask me, i think fingering your mouse just doesnt do it for you anymore

Well, I guess it gives me more time to spend with the girlfriend.

I just can't get into the roleplaying type games and I haven't been able to since I was 16 or so. The FPS gaves strike me as lame yet there hasn't been a decent stratgy game released since EU2. Heart of Iron 2 could be good if they ever fixed MP but Paradox has never released a game where the MP actually worked as advertised and their new Diplomacy game simply will not work without MP. I, and many other Diplomacy fans, have written threads at Paradox's forums asking them to stay faithful to the very simple yet extremely fun Diplomacy board game but they keep trying to make it "The next reat leap" for diplomacy (meaning it won't be diplomacy) and by making radical changes to the basics of the game ( they will turn it into a RTS instead of turn based game because that's what's currently hot).

There just isn't anything good being released these days.

              I agree completely

              26 and tired of games

Hoi2 desperately needs a patch. Paradox. Sigh.

Maybe that's because you were young, not because games were glorious back then and have started to suck later on?

There are plenty of games I still love.

I whish I could still play Age of Rifles on my machine- what a great war game. In fact, I whish I could still play Panzer General and Allied General in my computer- those were great.

I dream of Colonization 2 coming out- why won;t anyone do this!!

There are some games that would have much greater replay value had they existed.

For example, merge Simcity with Transport Tycoon, and Capitalism, and you get the "perfect" game. ( One of a few possible)

well I don't know what to say Oerdin... I feel the exact opposite as you.

For the first time in my life, I have top of the line hardware. And my gaming experience is simply awesome. There are so many great games, my biggest problem is deciding which to play. It's obvious our taste in games differs. I love FPS and RTS.

I just finished Doom3 last week. The game itself was good, but the ending was a bit disappointing. To be honest though, I'm not a big fan of endings at all. Endings are usually a disappointment for me because I don't want the game experience to end. Also, I beat Half-Life 2 a few days ago. That's a great game. The past 6 months have been really awesome with so many new games coming out. Right now, I'm in the process of beating Far Cry. After I beat Far Cry, I'm going to move on to Aliens Vs Predator 2, then Kotor2, then Star Wars Republic Commando. I still have Thief 2 and Brothers in Arms to get to. Not to mention Call of Duty and Call of Duty United Offensive. I love FPS's. And I still play Counter-Strike: Source.

And it's only going to get better in the near future with Battlefield 2 coming soon. Quake 4 is also in development (PC Gamer Nov 2004 edition). Age of Empires 3 comes out soon... Day of Defeat Source is going to go Beta soon. Call of Duty 2 is also in the works.

I know you don't like FPS, but there are other games too. I've been playing a lot of MVP Baseball 2005 and some Rome: Total War.

IMO, this is the best time to be a gamer. And things are only going to get better as new technologies and more advanced software comes out.
To us, it is the BEAST.

                              I like Sava's game choices

Half Life 2 was the shizzle, I highly recommend it

For awesome team play, the Battlefield series is the best. It has the best teamplay of any game I have ever played. The game is also momentum based, so there are alot of rallies, sweeps, and cornering going on.

I love being backed into a corner on a Battlefield map, and breaking the guy that breaks out and gets another base to keep the team going.
