I like this. It would be amazing. And the best thing is, EVIL CAPITALISTS WON'T BE ABLE TO MAKE TONS OF MONEY OFF OF IT BECAUSE YOU COULD DOWNLOAD STUFF FOR FREE!!!
To us, it is the BEAST.

Don't worry, you will have to pay expensive license fees every time you use the machine, regardless of what you do with it. The money is paid to either Britney Spears, Metallica, or PNAC (you choose which when you buy the machine)

my understanding is that a basic, non-digital lathe is the most complex machine that can replicate itself.

well, to be fair, I don't wish for the downfall of capitalism... I just want technology to usher in an era where wealth isn't so concentrated at the top.

Note that I said "EVIL capitalists"... because there is such a thing as "Good capitalists" it's just the latter are too few and far between.

And don't use russian submarines as material source - they are made of low quality steel
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

Ah, but not the original ones. They came from elsewhere in the gate network. The Russians ones developed from the sole Replicator that survived the crash of Thor's ship into the Pacific and found it's way onto a rotting piece of Soviet-era junk proud Russian sub.

                        !!

It should be cheaper than sending it accross the ocean in a crago ship and then accross the country in an 18 wheeler.
