  • Preemptive Wars

Just a little help needed. I need a list of preemptive wars and attacks during the 20th Century. I tried to Google but, of course, everything on the first ten pages regarded US-Iraq.

If possible, they should not include the US. Things like Russia attacking Finland, things like that, would be nice.

    Thanks

Six Days War is the obvious one. If you want to go back before the 20th century, the Confederate attack on Ft. Sumpter could count. In WWI I think Germany launched it's attack on the allies after Russia started mobilizing.

      I can't go before the 20th century.

I figured Six Days War was, but I posted here before looking it up.

To some degree, the German invasion of Norway during WW2- the German's feared the UK would go there first, to disrupt ore from Scandinavia, so they decided to invade first.

As for Germany in WW1, that's a bit controversial, plus the fact is that mobilization in WW1 meant war (cause you really could not turn the process back), so the beginning of that war is a bit too convoluted to go into very well.

There was the British sinking the French fleet in Oran(I believe) in 1940, fearing that the Germans would take control of it first. The French were not very happy about that attack.

Only half right about Norway Gepap. A few weeks before the Germans invaded a German transport ship carrying British POWs strayed into Norweigen waters while attempting to hide from the Royal navy. The British spotted the ship and went into Norweigen waters, captured it, and freed the POWs while two Norweigen Navy ships watched. The Norweigens said that though they prefered all foreign war ships respect their neutrality they were realistic about their ability to force the British or the Germans to respect their national borders. Hitler took this as a sign the Norweigens were leaning towards the allies so he preemptively invaded Norway in order to better control shipping through the Sund.

I assume by preemption you meant that they attacked to prevent an action by the other side, rather than simple conquest and/or control or defensive response. www.usafa.af.mil/jscope/JSCOPE05/Keyes05.html. Try Googling "preemption strike military -iraq -israel -bush -soviet -nato -rice".

Japanese Attack on the US in 1941. Japan did this because they felt the US bases in the Phillipines would preclude transportation of oil from the Dutch East Indies (Indonesia). Plus other reasons, but that is the preemption aspect.

British intervention in Iraq in 1940-1941 to prevent Iraq from becoming an Axis ally.

Israel's strike in June, 1981 on Osiraq 40 megawatt light-water nuclear reactor at the Al Tuwaitha Nuclear Center in Iraq.

2002 Indian strikes into Kashmir - don't know if that qualifies, here's a link. meaindia.nic.in/opinion/2002/06/11o03.htm

That's funny since Britney has had like three different boob jobs.
