What have you been smoking? Nobby's back in black and white.

Shepherd and Hall can be left alone this season. They finally ponied up after years of stinginess - and they listened to the fans who wanted Nobby back. Once our crocked midfield is healthy, we should be a reasonably competitive team. As it is two wins in the last couple of games despite having a hard time of it is a good sign.

I can't stand either Shepherd or Hall, and I don't trust them at all. However, they should be given credit for actually doing something this season.

British footie is now so commercialised that only 4 clubs matter, all the best players are'nt British.

The Goverment sits, looks. watches these 4 companies then does nothing about the state of it.

If only us English could persuade the Scots and Welsh, we could produce a decent UK team, and those silly teams could go to hell as they produce new talented british players- NOT.

As always, an unintestered person in football. BUT getting pissed off with how it is becoming.

I think that four of the best 5 players in the premiership are English. Rooney, Lampard, Gerrard, Terry.

ManU produced Beckham, Giggs, Scholes etc. They've got some new youngsters coming through, Keiron Richardson. Liverpool have always produced local players and currently Owen (now at Newcastle) Gerrard and Carragher stand out... Chelsea have got a great English core including Terry who's been with them since he was a kid. Even Arsenal have brought Ashley Cole through. None of them have been as successful recently as West Ham at bringing through youth players but would any of those players have made the progress they did if they were still at west ham not playing in the champions league with Chelsea?

More of the top teams are focussing on their English cores than a few years ago.

And I don't think that any Welsh, Scottish or Northern Irish players would make it into a British side these days. You might have Giggs in the squad but that's about it.

      • Indee. If he only follows the national team, and proclaims to be "uninterested" in football, then what makes him think he knows what he's talking about?

As Mike said, Chelsea's two best players are English. Man Utd's best two players are also English (Rooney/Ferdinand). Guess what, Liverpool's best players are English too (Carragher/Gerrard).

There are massive problems with the English national team, but a lack of good players is not one of them.
If I'm posting here then Counterglow must be down.

        • In fact, Rooney, Lampard, Gerrard and Ferdinand are up there with the best players in Europe.

Go watch your local team. It's a lot more fun, cheaper, and the club actually want you there for more than just the money.

And Mike, Lampard is still ridiculously over-rated. He's never performed well unless he's surrounded by world-class players.

            • He's never played with non-world class players since he matured as a player. What's your point?

Beckham, Giggs and Scholes have never performed unless they were surrounded by world class players.

Do you know what they were doing before they got into Man utd's first team? Winning trophies alongside the likes of Robbie Savage.

C'mom PH that youth team is widely considered to be one of the best ever.

Newcastle even made it to Europe next season - amazing what a different manager can do for you...

                              • Frustratedpoet et al,

I really am not knowedgable about the game, but I do love nation against nation- it's when I expect to witness football at it's best.
My post was somewhat rambling, but my heart was in the right place for me as I read occasionaly about £20 m paid for this Italian or this Dutchman to play for X club. £20 million would produce a lot of talented England players if put into scouts' wages alone, unfortunately it seems most English clubs are now companies and must provide a return for the shareholders, and thus think short-term (buying a player).

                                Thinking seriously, after hearing how much the Scots cheer the opposition when playing England from a Scottish uncle, I doubt the two nations will ever marry, even if the Welsh agreed. Very sad, and very pathetic I feel. Watching my nation play gave me this synopsis;

                                Yawn, yawn, yawn.

If our players are great then perhaps they need to practice together more often, but perhaps the shareholders don't like injuries or something like that......
