Yes, my dad learned to drive an automatic because of a hereditary nervous disorder (CMT) so he couldn't effectively operate a clutch.

...and before any worries, I did not inherit this trait (fortunately).

Ari Rahikkala, correcto and I feel this is important and good rule. Then again driving school in here is moderately 'tough'. Then again, they just said on the news some days ago, that automatics are becoming more popular, where every 5th new car gets automatic installed. Of course this still means a very small percentage has automatic, but it'll never become the standard in here, at least not in the next ten years I predict. People who learn to drive with manual usually stick with manual cars, IF it's an option. But these days, automatic transmission is pretty good so as for me, I would take automatic too if it was a better option otherwise, but it has to be a pretty new one for me to get that. But they're just fine too.

Now I actually do not want an automatic - I would rather have a manual regardless of cost...

You can switch if the correct speed is used. The only time you really need to do this is when you are about to make a turn. if you need to stop suddenly hitting the clutch and and brake and through it into neutrel. The key here is the car will tell you if you hear grinding going into 2nd from fourth your either going to fast and will be jerked to almost a complete stop or ur not usimng the clutch right. And just for the record, You will blow your tranmission faster then the engine doing this.
I have been driving a standard or manual as you call it for 19years Ijust bought anew truck and its auto I still reach for the clutch pedal

My father taught my brother to drive stick by taking him "car shopping." They'd go test drive a manual car, and then my dad would have him practice. I still don't know how to do it.

Generally each gear has a synchro to the gear above or bellow it but not to any others. Thus if you switch from 4th to 2 to fast there is the danger of grinding gears or damaging one of the synchros in your trany.

I guess so. I often read the first post then respond without prereading the whole thread.

I've never understood men who don't respect women drivers. The bad women drivers aren't bad because they're women. They're bad because they're, well, bad. Same goes with men.

We know all those texans drive those old 1947 Ford pickup trucks. We know they know how to drive manuals.

They just haven't gotten with the 21st century and drive automatics.
