Its just steam and ash with no lava. I guess technically you could call it an eruption but the real deal hasn't started and it might be years before it does. Of course it could also be tomorrow but a real eruption would be far more destructive.

The eruption in the early 80's caused a minor pyroclastic flow and a nice little lahar. since there was no snow on the mountain at the time things the lahar wasn't to big but if it erupts in the dead of winter there could be a nice mud flow caused by all that melting snow.

              Mt Saint Helens webcam:

              Currently off the grid.

Right now, Mt St. Helens is under a "Volcano Advisory Alert", level 2, with ash plumes of less than 25,000 feet:

"This alert level is declared by USGS-CVO when monitoring and evaluation indicate that processes are underway that have significant likelihood of culminating in hazardous volcanic activity but when the evidence does not indicate that a life- or property-threatening event is imminent. "

I'll have to see if I can get some shots of it this week. Since we've had 750+ degree sunny weather here, the skies should be clear.

My parents are coming up next weekend, and I was planning to take them up to the Mt. St. Helens observation center...but maybe not!

If Mt. Ranier ever erupts, Seattle will be destroyed by a lahar.
