Well when Adams wrote the part of Arthur Dent he was actually thinking of the actor Simon Jones who played him.

The worst thing about the new War of the Worlds, is that it's going to be set in America in the modern era.

I suppose the lowest common denominators in America wouldn't be interested in a movie that wasn't set in their country and era.
