The news release that Colon linked is instructive. This guy's basically going to manage Sony from New York City (if he's going to be managing anything global at all). Is Sony an American company now?

I agree with Azazel, IBM's selling it's PC business was a really stupid move.
They could have made it profitable if they had really wanted to.

Toshiba and JVC always beat Sony in both quality and design surveys. Heck, Samsung even beats Sony in design as often as not. Still this is a good thing and I don't think Sony needs to sell its founding unit it just needs to cut costs and improve designs.Originally posted by Ted Striker

How does getting rid of their powerful PC brand is distancing itself from Wintel? It's distancing themselves from the PC industry generally, since they've sold to Lenovo the IBM PC and notebook brandname, too ( or leased it away for 5 years), and completely sold their sub-brands.
If you mean that they are planning to mount some sort of secret assault with a complete computer+processor+OS juggernaut package, well, maybe, they will have a better time with the corporate market, though Apple's experience on the entire "complete package" field is somewhat an omen in the issue ( they did have other problems, too, though). I don't see how losing the PC unit now help.Comment

It was a low margin business and the CEO wanted to make his numbers look better by flogging it for all he could then concentrate on the high margin business. I my opinion that's short sighted because in a few years that CEO will be out the door but IBM has left a business it was both a leader and a founder in.Try http://wordforge.net/index.php for discussion and debate.Comment

Not sure about that. Around my neck of the woods, Chinese brands have caught on in some areas while Korean brands (esp. Samsung) in other areas. I realise Sony has a big annual ad budget, but their quality isn't as high as often claimed. What's more, they try to lock you in with proprietary stuff.Originally posted by Azazel
