Are there any such dress codes that bar women from wearing shirts and jackets?

Yep, some kids at school would make fun of her. Then the media -- especially Fox -- would show up to lionize her, declaring her the true voice of American youth. She'd be all over the national media for days, along with smug Christian pundits defending her against non-existant attacks. Her picture, in her demure dress, would be continually juxtaposed with pictures of Christine Aguilara, driving home a point so obvious it doesn't need articulation. The more hysterical conservative columnists -- think Cal Thomas -- would begin comparing her to the alleged "Christian martyr" of Columbine. Eventually, at a press conference, President Bush would be tossed a soft-ball question about the controversy, which he would use as an opportunity to praise her faith, denegrate teacher's unions, and promote abstinence-only sex education and No Child Left Behind. And the picture would run.

True, in a way. This is not so much about sexuality as it is about cross-dressing. And, fundamentally, gender-bound clothing is silly, gender-bound dress codes are double silly, and this is all triple silly for female humans since they got the right to wear whatever they wish back in the 1920s.

They are not stupid. I now work at a Middle School and we have a dress code period. If you don't follow it, you are in trouble period. If you do follow it, everything is fine.

It's against the law to mandate that women wear dresses.

But it isn't (unless you are in California) to say they can't wear pants. Especially when the men are required to wear suits.

Social conventions are just deep rooted discrimination.

This is another reason I am against school uniforms, the female uniform almost invariably consists of a skirt, and forcing people to conform to culturally imposed dress expectations is wrong.

Don't say that too loud. A year back (or so), I mentioned that a policy mandating skirts or dresses (ie, no pants) for women was sexist and nearly got my head ripped off by the people here.

This is a public school and it wasn't a school uniform.
