  • New Job Causing the Blues

Okay, I've not started the new job yet, next academic year. But, today, I accepted a new teaching/coaching position with my current school's RIVAL. Everything points to this being a good decision:

    (1) more money, less teaching work-load

    (2) opportunity to take over a storied wrestling program

    (3) closer to home

    (4) my wife teaches dance at the new school

However, I'm incredibly sad. Seriously! I'll be leaving a wonderful job with a superb work environment and great friends. Part of me also feels like I'm abandoning my friends whom I coach wrestling with currently.

The school I'll be going to is very excited.

What do you think? Will this feeling pass? Is it an indication that I've made a poor decision?

What does the rivalry look like? Is it light-hearted, or do people take it seriosuly?

It's one of those side effects of being an allround good persoon I'm afraid. Not much you can do about it.
Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing?

There are extremists on both sides. The only people who are level-headed about it are those like myself, people who didn't go to either school.

I guess I just need to mourn for some amount of time, then begin anew.

What does a job have to do with friends? Are you a professional or someone who can only get hired or do the job if they are your firends?

Oh, I see, you are looking for a career and not a job.

If you want to work with friends in a friendly environment go work at blockbuster.

Seriously, grow up, and do what you need to for your family and your future.

That a boy Japher! Just what I need. A cold bucket of water dumped over my head.

Btw, I did do what I needed to do for me and my family. I took the job.

                  Good.

The best decissions made in life seem to also be the hardest to make.

You are doing fine in acknowledging the fact that what you and what you need are two different things... You'd be a fewl to go with what you want at this point in your life.

The trick now is to make the two the same thing.

You can work toward what you want, but you can ignore your responsiblities to yourself and your family. If you were to stay...

And people think Americans care only about money.

It's all temporary if you're planning on higher acedemic thingamawhatsits. Take the job, get the higher academic thingamawhatsits, in whatever order is necessary.

Trust me, the academic thingamawhatsits matter. Today I saw an ad in the paper (the friggin local paper) saying "Ph.D in Computer Science, Security Clearance, 110K salary." That's about twice what I currently make, just for a friggin Ph.D. and a US citizenship (plus security clearance). I mean, stick with it -- it only gets better, knock on wood.
