  • Run-ins with the Rich and Famous.

I once delivered pizza to Kim Basinger's parents, drove Alec Baldwin from Georgia Square Mall in Athens, met Bruce Campbell* (Evil Dead, Briscoe County Jr), "Spike"* from Buffy, Harlan Ellison*, and Larry Niven* at various cons/signings.

What are your run-ins with the rich and famous? (Other than meeting me, of course. )

*Might not be considered rich or famous in some circles.

I met Chris Chelios at a local ice rink. It was after hockey practice and I was waiting for my parents to pick me up. I was waiting in the area between the two sets of doors for the ice rink and he just walked through the door with his nephew. At first I didn't notice, but my jersey was out and he said, "Hey, number 7!" (that was my number) I was awestruck and he offered to sign my shirt (not the jersey because I was going to have to wash it at SOME point).

The bad news is, my mom washed the shirt after just a few days. I screamed "OMG MY CHRIS CHELIOS AUTOGRAPH!"

She simply replied, "What? I saw some writing on your shirt and washed it."
To us, it is the BEAST.

Talked to and shook Michael Eisner's hand at Epcot.

Shook GWB's hand (I had never met a presidential candidate so I stared at his hand till he asked 'you ok?')

Met Pataki a couple of times

Pataki's daughter (really hot, but not all there)

        Pat Buchanan (limp wrist)

        The former DNC vice chair

        A bunch of congressmen

        State senators/assembly

        Semi-famous politicos

The original Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen from the serials

a bunch of others who might be considered local celebrities, but that's about it.

Anne Hathaway goes to my college. Dave Mathews used to live in my town, and he used to pick his nephew up from my middle school. I went and lobbied at the most recent DNC caucaus, and met Dean, Sharpton, and a couple of lesser politicos.

I had lunch with Phil Foglio.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

Met Jacques Toubon once, very famous internationally for being the creator of our language and quota laws. You know me, I naturally greatly liked his autograph

Worked as an intern for Fodé Sylla, one of the leaders of the antiracist movement in France.

Met Alain Krivine, a prominent far-left leader. That was during my internship, so I listened much more than I talked.

WEll, I've met some big hockey stars many times, Jari Kurri on several occasions on few hockey camps, played with him on ice plus Esa Tikkanen and all that... multiple stanley cup winners. Also I've chatted up Saku Koivu etc.. you run into them in here all the time and they are easily approachable.

                    Well...

I shook hands with Alphonse D'Amato (former NY Senator)

I think that may be it .

                      Two good ones:

                      1) After seeing the execreble movie Congo, I was posted to a Usenet board (probably rec.arts.movies) my "Top 10 Reasons Congo Sucked." One of the reasons was: "Bruce Campbell, who could have saved this mess, is killed off in the first few minutes." I later received an e-mail of thanks from -- yep -- Bruce Campbell.

                      2) I was out one night barhopping in Chicago with a few friends, and we found ourselves in the Old Town Ale House at about 3 am, getting ready to call in a night. Suddenly, in comes this guy, clearly pretty messed up, and my friend Rachel says, "Holy sh*t, it's John Cusack." Our little table then argues about whether or not it's really him, until finally Rachel and I approach him and Rachel says, "We think you're John Cusack, and, if you are, we think you need to drink with us." To which he replies, "Well, I am...so I willl!" So we bought Cusack a Guiness, impressed him by wanting to talk about 8 Men Out (which he loved making but hardly anyone had seen), and then bid him farewell as he rejoined his boozy, possibly-coked-up friends.

                      Bruce Cambell
                      John Cusack

My dad sat next to John Candy in `1992 on a flight from Toronto to Calgary (he was filming Cool Runnings at the time).

As for me, Arnold Schwarzenegger in Paris.

Had dinner with Matt Groening (pretty short dinner, to be fair). Had lunch with Sergey Brin and Larry Page of Google. Saw Jeff Bezos in a Subway's. Sat next to Herbie Hancock and chatted with him. All of this happened over two days. Haven't had many celebrity encounters since...

Met Walter Matthau during the filming of the Laughing Policeman on my street in San Fran, really nice man.

A friend of mine was one of the children on the school bus hijacked by the bad guy in Dirty Harry and his father was the ABC weatherman in San Fran.

We wanted to see Clint Eastwood when they filmed it on our mountain in San Fran (the one with the giant concrete cross in Dirty Harry) but no such luck.

                            Thats about it

I poured Russell Crowe beers once. His brother lives in my home town. I met Prince Charles once - he has a big nose.

I also, without realizing it, met Alan Minter, the former world middleweight champ. He came to our pub chatted to me and after he left some regulars told me who it was.
