    Microsoft recalls Xbox cords
Minor burn injuries and carpet scorching force company to replace 14 million power cords.
    February 17, 2005: 8:20 AM EST

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp., the world's largest software maker, said Thursday it will recall 14.1 million power cords for its Xbox video game console after a defect gave some users minor burns and scorched carpets.

Robbie Bach, chief Xbox officer for Microsoft (Research), told Reuters the recall covered all Xboxes made for continental Europe before Jan. 13, 2004, and the rest of the world before Oct. 23, 2003.

Consoles built after those dates were designed in such a way that the failures no longer occurred, Bach said.

"It ends up being a combination of both things in the box and circumstances," he said. "It did take us quite a bit of time to understand that there was a challenge."

The recall represents a significant portion of the worldwide Xbox installed base of more than 20 million. Microsoft debuted the Xbox in November 2001 in the United States and subsequently rolled it out worldwide.

Based on reports to its customer service unit and warranty repair data, Bach said Microsoft had observed a failure rate of about 1 in 10,000 units.

In 30 of those, users suffered either minor burns or damage to property, including scorched carpets, he said.

Affected customers can request a new power cord free of charge via the Web site, Xbox.com (http:/www.xbox.com), or by calling toll-free numbers in their respective countries.

Microsoft said customers would get replacement cords within 2-4 weeks from the time of order, and in the interim it advised users to turn off their Xboxes when not in use.

In March 2002, Japanese retailers temporarily stopped selling the console just weeks after its launch there because some machines were scratching discs. The company made an unconditional offer to replace hardware and any damaged software.

Bach said some consoles on retail shelves in Japan and Korea were also affected by the electrical problem and Microsoft was working with retailers there to replace the cords in those units.

Microsoft is widely expected to release a successor to the Xbox this year. Rival and industry leader Sony Corp. (Research) is expected to launch the third version of its popular PlayStation console next year.

The Xbox Live service, which allows players to compete online from their living rooms, is expected to have 1.6 million to 1.8 million subscribers by the end of the fiscal year in June. The company had originally forecast 1.5 million users.
You need the Xbox serial # and date of manufacture (found on the Xbox), and you'll get a free replacement cord in 2-4 weeks via mail.
"The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."

Recently we received a letter from a viewer who decided to share with us a story of guts and heart in the face of unbelievable danger. We’d like to introduce you to Greg W., a gamer who nearly lost everything he had when his Xbox fell victim to a horrible accident on a busy freeway. The following story has been unedited by TeamXbox, in order to ensure its integrity while we respect those no longer with us. We must warn you; what you are about to read is disturbing and quite graphic. Viewer discretion is advised.

Here now is the actual letter we received by Greg, in its entirety and including the graphic photographs that we have not edited or censored in any way.

“I'm writing to you because I want to share a story and I thought you might find it interesting. I recently moved back down to college and had my Xbox packed up in the back of my truck. While on the freeway the box came loose and was picked up by the wind. The Xbox fell out of the box and onto the freeway. It slid upside down for about 300ft before coming to rest on the shoulder. I lost my controller, my A/V and power cables but my Xbox was still intact.

The shocking and graphic damage this Xbox withstood after a highway accident

When I got down to my new apartment, I rushed to see if my Xbox would still work. To my surprise, the Xbox turned on and started right up. It even loaded PGR2 which was still in the drive, even during the fall. The game ran fine and so did the Xbox. It is still running to this day. I love my Xbox even more now.”

            -Greg Werhane

We hope this story of survival inspires and strengthens the hearts of all Xbox owners out there. Tonight, before you go to bed, take a look at your Xbox and say thanks; thanks for providing us with hours and hours of gaming goodness.

Is an Xbox light enough to be tossed like that? I mean, I used to put things like backpacks in the back of my truck all the time, which were certainly lighter than an Xbox, and nothing ever fell out.

He was on the highway. And the Xbox is pretty heavy (compared to GC and PS2).

Come on Drake, be fair. This is actually better than usual for MS.

If it was like their other products, it would wait until you left home and use the internet play feature to broadcast to the local crooks that it was safe to rip off your house.

Do you really think Microsoft designed the power cable...?

Does it really matter? They should test these things before they include them with their product, regardless of whether they designed it or not.

                              Question?

Does MS use Underwriter labs to test off on these things? Thats SOP for most appliance manufacturers especially to test for shorts and possibility of burns etc.
