  • Las Vegas Space Program (Pictures)

Some of you may have heard me mention the private space program being put together in Las Vegas by Robert Bigelow (Budget Suites of America). There is a cover story in Popular Science that is light on details and long on personal story (i.e., pretty useless from a space enthusiast's perspective). But it has some great pics!

    Here's a mock-up of a Nautilus space station module.

And the inside of the mock-up.

Here's an artist's drawing of the potential use of the inside space.

    Here's a rendering of a single-Nautilus space station.

And a rendering of a cruiser capable of moon fly-bys.

The concept for inflatable space station modules started with NASA's Transhab program that was canceled 5 or so years ago. Bigelow licensed NASA's technology and is running with the ball. He has a small staff that have put some flyable spacecraft together.

As I have stated in the past, the chances of Bigelow putting a series of stations into orbit is quite high. He already has ordered as many as 7 rocket flights (1 American; 6 Russian) for the test program.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

In space, it is easier to keep things up because the gravitational force is much lower. This may be the best all natural viagra substitute.

what the hell? I live here and never heard of that.

Budget Suites? those are pretty dumpy. Mostly weekly monthly rentals for the poor.

I doubt he's putting these modules together here (we just don't have the room).

That was my impression as well, although more "functional" rather than "dumpy." By no means luxurious.

It doesn't take too much room to build the number of modules that he is building (only a handful at this time), but Bigelow has plenty of room to expand. He's got 30 acres in North Las Vegas -- at Cheyenne & Clayton, off of I-15 near the North Las Vegas airport. Only about 60 people work there.

He also opened an office in Houston, presumably to take advantage of some of the space workforce available there.

very interesting - cheers for link it was a good read

“Where’s the inspiration in America?” Bigelow asks. “If you asked 50 people or 500 people, ‘What is America’s inspiration today?’ what would they say? To win the war in Iraq? That doesn’t create a dream in some kid’s mind. An inspiration has to be something you carry with you 24/7.”
He's got that about right i'd say. Its a shame more countries/companies dont put the effort into Space exploration imho.

One question comes up with things like this, where a private individual goes and puts their own money in to get a project going.

What can they claim is theirs? I know in this case he's looking at an orbital hotel, but for others that might want to try mineral extraction etc, how can they ensure they get the goods and not the governments for example?

Is there space in space for corporate expansion or will national issues always get in the way(and proveing who's national interests they are is another bag of worms?), thus stopping the potential investment by private companies and individuals?

Are the Russians involved in this? Seriously, on those last two pics it looks as if there are Soyuz (sp?) ships docked on the station....

It didnt say in the article, but i guess there could be some russian buisness involvement? Maybe he just plans to buy a couple of cheap craft from the russians(he is very good at managing bugets apparently)?
