  • Der Untergang - the Downfall (the new Hitler movie)

I just came back from watching it. It was horribly powerful and captivating. It went on for 150 minutes and I couldn't tear my eyes off the screen even for a moment. It made you live through the last moments of the leadership of the 3rd Reich, down to even the smallest, cruelest detail. I've read all about the events in various books, but everything still hits you very hard. It's the way they show everyone as human beings, even Hitler and Goebbels. And when the time finally comes, they show Magda Goebbels carefully killing each of her six children one by one, putting the poison capsule in their mouths and pressing their jaws together so the capsule breaks.

Everyone should watch this film, for the insight it gives to the insanity and evil of which mankind is capable.

Haven't yet seen it, but it is the one movie I am going to see in theater. I usually have skipped theaters and just watch it home, but this I will see from big screen.

Yes, definitely watch it in the theatre. It was the first movie I've been to where nobody uttered a single word for the duration, and it's a long movie.

The scenes of a destroyed Berlin and the fighting are also extremely well made. The scene where the inhabitants of Hitler's bunker go to the ground floor to party in the night, drunk and desperate, only to be interrupted by an artillery barrage, is incredibly visceral.

I had some thoughts of seeing this movie at the Göteborg Film Festival last week. But I thought it was a bit too...depressing.
