I am constantly amazed by that feature of english.... In Spanish, if you know how a word is written, you know how to pronounce it, there is a direct relation
written form => pronounced form.
I had always wondered why other languages are not that way. And, please, don't take it as an attack against the English, please. I have learned to love this language, although I am very bad at it.Trying to rehabilitateh and contribuing again to the civ-communityComment

Because English is a polyglot lanugage. Our linguistic sources are: Latin, German, French, Celtic, Norse, etc. In addition, whenever we see a word in another language we like, we take it. English has the largest vocabulary of any language in the world, over half a million different words, not including scientifical and trade jargon. che, I had seen that figure of yours many time and I don't understand where it came from. The official dictionary of Spanish, that doesn't include all words, is around 400,000 words IIRC. Plus, we got many words from Latin (of course), but also from Arabic, Germanic (some words for our former master, the visigoths), French (a lot of french words from the glory age of France), italian (from the middle ages and later on, when we were rulers of many parts of Italy), Basque, etc
