My mom served in the Peace Corp after we were all out of college. Her job was an English teacher in one of the really small western towns. It was several hours from Katmandu.
Every day she would walk from the house, purchased and maintained by the Peace Corp, to the school, where she taught for free to anyone, kids or young adults, who wanted to learn. During that ten minute walk she had to keep a look out for groups of boys that would throw rocks at her. I don't think she was ever seriously hurt, fortunately, but it was clear Westerners were not welcome in this country.
She had to quit for this and many other reasons. She was attempting to give any assistance she could provide - for free, but the short-sightedness of some local Nepalese groups rally the population against UN aid workers, peace corp, doctors without borders, etc.
Of course the maoist revolution has to be put down at all costs, however this country needs to get on the path of a constitutional monarchy. I'm not optimistic about Nepal. Never have been. A maoist take-over would push the country down even into more misery. It is a lose-lose situation really. If it isn't the king taking out opponents it would be the maoists, and it would be worse.
For there is [another] kind of violence, slower but just as deadly, destructive as the shot or the bomb in the night. This is the violence of institutions -- indifference, inaction, and decay. This is the violence that afflicts the poor, that poisons relations between men because their skin has different colors. - Bobby Kennedy (Mindless Menance of Violence)
This is the second or third time he has assumed power . Don't worry , his past behaviour shows he will return power to the people and restore democracy . Remember , he has done this before .
I just hope he cracks down ( very very hard ) on the rebels , and kills them to the last man . Only then will India see a stable buffer on the Chinese side . And only then will there be a chance for the country of Nepal to return to normalcy and democracy .
If Nepal asks for military help , I hope India contributes . Out troops are better used killing Chinese-sponsored communist scum in a neighbouring nation than in Iraq ( thank god we were sensible enough not to send troops to Iraq , or Muslim sentiment against India would have been very very negative ) .

Seriously though, Maoists suck. They have this horrid tendency to kill their problems away. Course, the Nepalese government is worse, so relatively speaking, the Maoists are better.

The UN should go in. In a small country they might actually have a good chance to make a difference.

That's a little prejudice. Don't you think?
Yes, but it's based on their historical practice.
