Whatever else you think of the rest of Gladiator, the opening battle scene was pretty damned good. "The risk to the cavalry ..." "IS acceptable"

    Glory. It was excellent.

Clint Eastwood PC movies? Oy. I'll try the videos. Eventually.

Patton. Havent seen it since it was in theaters. Honestly, but I remember it being pretty good.

    Seven Samurai, definitely.

There was a war film that i really wanted to see all of since i only caught the second half of it years ago, maybe somebody will recognise it if i give my vague recollection of it (which by now is prob a muddle of several films ).
It was about a group of insurgents, can't remember if it was france or somewhere more middle europe. They were trying to disrupt a train line iirc, in the end though 1 of them betrayed the others to the germans and they were hiding out in a cellar. The germans tried to storm it but were beaten back because of the tight entrance so they tried chucking in some gas to smoke them out but there was a small window and 1 of them got shot getting the canisters out. The germans then blocked the window and started pumping water in via the door so all the insurgents stood in a circle, said their goodbyes to each other and drowned.
I recall a similar story line from a TV series ( I think the name was "True") in the early 60's. What I remember is that they were Czech and they had assinated the Nazi miltary governer. The cellar was fortress-like and the outside access was a narrow door that became a deathtrap to any German soldiers attempting to storm the building. The ending I remember was that they shot themselves rather than being taken alive when they ran out of amunition. Supposedly a true story.
Even a fool is thought wise if he remains silent.

        Worst:

Braveheart: Oh look, it's the mediaeval English Nazis! Let's assemble a raggle taggle pan-Celtic woad warrior gang of painted Mad Maxes to oppose them ! (completely ignoring anything like historical accuracy on the way...)

The Patriot: Oh look, it's the Enlightenment's British Empire Nazis ! Gibson is ably supported by cute black mammies and Step'n'fetchits who just love being slaves to their kind colonial master... (and let's, as before, completely ignore anything like historical accuracy..)

Pearl Harbour: Two planks of wood playing a nurse and an all puprose military type fall in lurve despite the sheer inconvenience of a world war and a surprise Japanese attack on their luau and lanai time.

The Green Berets: John Wayne's patriotic attempt to show that, even though he had 'avoided' serving in a war he was eligible for, by golly, now he could vicariously lick those Viet Cong types armed only with speeches as thick as molasses and acting only marginally less treacly.

It sounds like a dramatisation of the assassination of Heydrich by Czech paratroopers.

I seem to recall Timothy Bottoms was in it...

Despite your insinuations to the contrary, no one in America considers John Wayne to be a coward or a draft-dodger. He applied to the Naval Academy coming out of high school (but wasn't accepted). By the time WWII started, he was 34 and had four kids. His work as an actor was valued as a means of shoring up support on the home front for the war; he even got a deferrment in "support of the national interest". And he supported the war effort in other ways, like performing for the troops with the USO.

So yes, the Duke never served, but that doesn't mean he wasn't still ten times the man you are, you pompous *****...

And my intention wasn't to merely insult molly. It was to defend John Wayne, an American icon. I would expect you to do the same for a German icon like David Hasselhoff.

I'm so glad you approved of my plot summaries- it must be such a relief for you to be able to read English as it should be written, by someone who speaks it as their first language.

Oh Dreck, now really... I do know the difference between 'evade' and 'avoid', between Republican chickenhawks and those who served...

A coward ? I don't recall making any such remark about Mr. Wayne's 'courage' or potential for demonstrating said 'courage' .

As to the substance of your statement, I must say that I'm astonished by your ability to carry out a nationwide survey of the United States and at your certainty as to the veracity of the results.

Such positively Herculean labours probably account for the eerie familiarity of much of this part of your post:

                            • I remember watching on TV some Brit movie about Africa. The high minded colonial officers intervened to stop some REALLY bad people from messing with the leadership of this tribe, and made sure the rightful tribal king ruled in peace and prosperity. The dark people were VERY grateful to the wise British officers. I dont recall the name of the movie. Im sure it was QUITE historically accurate, and was designed to give one the most accurate possible picture of the British empire.
