Americans take note - 3 weeks! Sensible election campaign length!

Yeah that's real reasonable and sensible.. call elections right when the opposition is in trouble, and don't allow for sufficient campaigning.
For there is [another] kind of violence, slower but just as deadly, destructive as the shot or the bomb in the night. This is the violence of institutions -- indifference, inaction, and decay. This is the violence that afflicts the poor, that poisons relations between men because their skin has different colors. - Bobby Kennedy (Mindless Menance of Violence)

Well, apart from the fact that in this case the opposition were longing even more for an election than the Prime Minister, despite being hopelessly behind in the polls.

That's what they said anyway. Whether people believe it or not is another matter.

Besides, Danish politicians are basically always campaigning. They just tend to intensify it a little when there's an upcoming election.

You should have made a poll. I bet RV would get 50% here

That's the kind of typical anti-Danish sentiments I expect from you.

I agree - it is a misuse of the system. I will be voting for radikale venstre (radical left!), who incidentially are also against calling elections like that.

(Though they are named radical left! they are a mainstream center party, with an strong idealistic streak.)

I like the thought that our PM doesn't have to beg for permission from a couple of center parties with five seats each before he's able to do anything.

Which in turn brings us to...

Undoubtedly there's potential for abuse. However, the option of calling a new election may provide for a way out of deadlocked parlaimentary issues which is highly relevant given our tradition for minority governments.

Of course it does require the government will actually do so when, say, the opposition starts conducting national foreign policy.

                    Radikale Venstre
Why can't America have a party like that? It sounds like a very welcome change of pace from the Dems and Repubs (hell even the non-Radikale Venstre looks a hell of a lot better than we've got).

Cuz we don't have a proportional sytem.

If you are leading in polls, you shouldn't just call for elections because you feel like it. That is why the American republic is much better at representation and is far more proportional then the banana republics throughout Europe.

MikeH, you don't know what you are talking about.

Fez is right. The Democrats are only funded by big business, not heavily funded.

The democrats are funded by leftists groups like Moveon (as shown with the recent election).

And the republicans are funded by patriots.
