Can someone tell me exactly what the difference between corporate and personal planets is?

Corp planets can be shared with alliance members. You can get the other players fighter/mines/etc. everything but money or add to F/M/E.

Nasty players will join your alliance, see you corp bank planet, strip it of defenses while you are away, the quit your stupid alliance and take your bank...not that I would know

So basically dont make corporate planets unless you trust the members of your alliance.

Are there any actual advantages to having a corporate planet. It is not likely that your allies will defend you planets for you.

Not true. I did exactly that with some 1000 of my turns in BNT1. My allies had weak, vulnerable planets, and I shipped in fighters.
